Chat Settings
Every PebbleChat conversation has its own settings popover, accessed via the gear icon on the left side of the composer (next to where you type your messages).

These are per-chat settings — you can have different configurations for different conversations. A long-running research chat might have background processing and alerts enabled, while a quick question might not need either.
Looking for profile or account settings? Those live in Collaboration & Profile → Profile & Account. This page is about the gear icon inside PebbleChat, not the avatar menu in the top bar.
The three toggles
Chime when complete
Plays an audible tone when a chat response finishes streaming. Useful when:
- You’re running a long research query and have alt-tabbed away
- You’re working on something else while PebbleChat generates a draft
- You want a hands-free cue that a background chat has finished
The chime respects your system audio settings — if your laptop is muted, PebbleChat can’t force the sound through.
Background processing
When on, this chat continues processing on the server even if you:
- Navigate away to another part of PebbleAI
- Start a new chat in a different tab
- Close your browser (as long as you come back within the background session timeout)
When off, navigating away cancels in-progress generation for this chat — useful if you’re iterating quickly and don’t want half-finished responses piling up.
Background alerts
When on, PebbleChat fires a notification (and optionally a browser notification) when a background chat completes. Works hand-in-hand with Background processing:
- Background processing + Background alerts = you’ll know when it’s done without having to check
- Background processing without alerts = it runs silently; you need to come back and check manually
- Background alerts without processing = no effect (there’s no background work to alert on)
See Notifications for how the alerts appear and Advanced Features → Background Chat for the full background chat flow.
Changing settings during a chat
You can change these settings at any point — even mid-stream. A change takes effect immediately:
- Toggling Background processing off mid-stream will cancel the current run if you navigate away
- Toggling Chime on mid-stream will cause the chime to play when the current run completes
- Toggling Background alerts on mid-stream will fire a notification when the current run completes
Defaults
When you start a new chat, the settings default to your last-used values, so if you always want chime and alerts on, you only have to set them once per device.
